No Place Like Home

The performance “No Place Like Home” explores the silence and compliance surrounding child sexual abuse within family systems, aiming to bring discourse about domestic violence out of the private sphere and heighten awareness of collective responsibility.

Countless cases of sexualized domestic violence remain hidden because victims have too much at stake, lack legal protection, aren’t believed, or cannot recognize the violence as such when perpetrators are shielded by their environment and acts are minimized or denied. This work examines these manipulative mechanisms and their lifelong consequences for survivors: What values and norms do we internalize when experiencing years of humiliation and violence in our own homes, when everyone knows yet everyone remains silent? How can a body whose boundaries were repeatedly violated reclaim its autonomy and feel like home again? How can a home be associated with safety when it was the site of crime for years? The transdisciplinary performance interweaves poetic and explicit language, seeking physical and psychological states that reveal the ambiguity between revulsion and attraction toward one’s own and other bodies—sometimes trapped in endlessly repeating spirals of memory interfering with new situations, sometimes hopeful through the endless possibilities and empowerment of queer desire.
